In Today’s Economy, Building a Strong Personal Brand is Key to Job Search and Career Success: Part I

In almost every news report on how to succeed in your job search and career in today's economy, the experts advocate that having a strong personal brand can be the difference in securing employment, surviving a layoff or advancing your career.

Your personal reputation is what lets people know what they can expect from you. Your personal career brand allows you to leverage your reputation, authentic strengths, principles and unique promise of value to distinguish you from your competition. We are not asking that you change who you are. We are suggesting that if you define and live your personal career brand you will reap greater rewards in your job search and career management.

Why Personal Career Branding is Critical for Latinos
- "If you don't build your personal career brand, others will label you."

The fact is you are giving your power to other people to categorize and define you from their perspective. Do you want to be identified as Chuy's sister, Mr. Johnson's assistant, the brown one or the Latino accountant.

You may be described solely as your job title or job description. Is this how you wish to be known? No matter what kind of work you do or where you are in your career, would you prefer to be perceived as the Cadillac, Lexus, or Volvo of employees, or as a 4-cylander basic performance vehicle?

The chart below lists the benefits of building your personal career brand.

1. Helps you understand yourself better.

2. Allows you to embrace your values, knowledge, skills, abilities, contributions, achievements, uniqueness, and worthiness.

Creating your personal domain blog with your profile, networks related to your profession, blog roll, etc. will also help you create a personal branding, but this time, it is online.

This is such a great

This is such a great resource that you are providing and you give it away for free. I love seeing websites that understand the value of providing a quality resource for free. It’s the old what goes around comes around routine.

I agree up to a point

I agree with much of what you say. But it largely depends upon the role that you want to go for. It's not always necessary to be perceived as a 'Cadillac'. Many are content to be a 'basic performance vehicle' and contentment is very valuable.

Personal reputation among

Personal reputation among co-workers and you impression on seniors definitely helps you land new jobs. Your boss changes job, joins another company at a higher post. If you are in his/her good books, when you are looking for a change, he/she will open the doors for you. It's common sense :)

Digitally dabbling: There is

Digitally dabbling: There is some on-brand information on the Web about you. Although the volume of results is not high, the material that's there is relevant to your personal brand. This is an easy fix.

Digitally distinct: There are lots of results about you and most, if not all, reinforce your unique promise of value.

Step Two: Understand Your Personal Brand

Of course, you can't build an online reputation unless you first articulate your unique promise of value -- your personal brand. And communicating your brand is especially challenging online, since your presence will be among billions of other Web pages, and people click away from sites quickly

Is your Brand bull?

After hyping yourself up, one should make sure that their Brand lasts the test of time:

Is Your Brand Bull? Building The Brand

I come across people that promote themselves, the second part to this Brand-You trend is to make sure that your brand has some sustenance...make sure that it has value and that it delivers after the hype.

I wrote more on this here: http://louispagan.com/2009/03/is-your-brand-bull-building-brand.html
